Pre-season netting

I can’t believe it’s really 2010 and the new season starting next month.

After one of the worst winters on record Spring has finally arrived with the temperature going from -12 to 20+ over the last two weeks. All the trees are beginning to come out so we are working hard to get the lakes ready for you all.

The most exciting news is that last weekend we drained and netted the stock pond. The whole experiment was started in 2007, when the stock pond was cleared, drained and re-dug.





In 2008 we put a batch of small-medium sized Carp into the pond and fed them over the last two years on a special diet of pellet (and left over bait!).

Around 25 fish were originally put into the pond at weights up to about 20lbs, and last week we took out 20 fish ranging from 19 to 33 lbs.



These fish have now been introduced to Rouge and Bleu to supplement the already large stock of fish.

We did get some interesting surprises along the way:
- A healthy head of 4-6lb carp, born and bred in the stock pond
- A couple of wriggly catfish
- Several small perch and one big one about 1 ½ lbs.
- A cheeky tench that William rescued from the drain above Rouge in 2008

Where do they all come from?



We have also put in a few new drains and improvements and I have been chopping down trees for next winter.

Looking to the season ahead, let’s hope that 2010 proves to be as successful as 2009 when just about every lake record was broken.
